The Pi Memorization Song

A song that teaches the Major System and locks the first 50 digits of pi into your head as a chain of 25 vivid images. Listen, sing along, and the digits stick.

How It Works

The first verse teaches the Major System — a code that maps each digit to a consonant sound. The middle verses string those sounds into 25 words, two digits at a time, telling a small story you can replay in your head. Once you can picture the story, you can recite pi to 50 decimal places.

Lyrics

Verse 1 — The Code

Well, zero is a Z, like the Z that starts "zero"
And one is T or D, one downstroke is the hero
Two is N — two legs going down to the floor
Three is M — three legs are what the M is for
Four is R — the last sound when you say "four"
Five is L — like Roman fifty knocking at the door
Six is in ship or chip or jet or gem
Seven is K — two sevens make a key
Eight is F or V — see the cursive lowercase f
Nine is B or P — just flip 'em over, that's the rest

Chorus

Pi is a never-ending number
(Never-ending number!)
Pi is a never-ending number
(Never-ending number!)
But you can keep it in your head with the major system code
Turn the digits into letters, letters into words to hold

Numbers turn to pictures
Pictures turn to stories
Stories keep the digits
For you and yours and all of ours

Verse 2 — Digits 1–14

A tire14 rolled past a doll15 with a pen92 in her hand
She wrote me from jail65 where she came in on a mule35
She gave off a vibe89, then she sipped from a cup79
Pointed up at the moon32, watched a movie38 called rash46

That's three point one four one five nine
Two six five three five
Eight nine seven nine three two three eight
And the digits keep coming alive

Chorus

Pi is a never-ending number
(Never-ending number!)
Pi is a never-ending number
(Never-ending number!)
But you can keep it in your head with the major system code
Turn the digits into letters, letters into words to hold

Verse 3 — Digits 15–24

A nacho26 on the rim43 of a glass colored mauve38
A man32 in a cap79 came along and knocked it off
Lace50 caught on a knife28 in the heart of a fire84
A tab19 and a cat71 and a chip69 on a map39

That's four six two six four three three eight three
Two seven nine five zero two eight eight four
One nine seven one — keep counting with me
Pi has so many digits in store

Verse 4 — Digits 25 and the Wrap-Up

A beam93 made of coal75 fell down on her toes10
And that's how I remember the way that pi goes
Twenty-five pictures and fifty digits long
Locked up in your head by the words of this song
